Lesson 1 of 5
The Shahada
What is the Shahada?
The Shahada is the declaration of faith — the first of the Five Pillars of Islam, and the foundation everything else rests on. It has two parts.
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā-llāh, wa-ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu-llāh
“I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

What you are declaring
Two parts, explained simply:
A declaration that nothing in creation is worthy of worship except God alone.
An acceptance that Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet, and that his example is the guide for how to live.
Why it matters
These two sentences are the doorway. Everything in Islam — prayer, fasting, pilgrimage — flows from this declaration. You don’t have to be perfect to say it. You just have to mean it.
In the Qur’an
Allāh witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
So know, [O Muḥammad], that there is no deity except Allāh and ask forgiveness for your sin and for the believing men and believing women. And Allāh knows of your movement and your resting place.

A note on saying it
Saying the Shahada sincerely, believing it in your heart, is the core act. Many people say it before two witnesses as a formal occasion. If you have questions about your own situation, a scholar at your local mosque is the right person to speak with.
